What is Materialise?
Materialise is a platform and programme for new and emerging makers selected from graduating cohorts from across Scottish Art Schools. It is a supportive, co-developed, evolving range of activities that has spanned bursaries, professional development, residencies and online and in-person exhibition opportunities.
Each year the Materialise programme is designed by the cohort themselves and aims to meet their specific, identified needs. Each chosen maker also receives the New Makers Award of £250 towards the development of their practice.
New Makers Award
We visit all the major Scottish degree shows as well as Fife College and our staff team have the privileged but difficult task of selecting the makers that we feel will benefit from the award. We also look for practices and approaches that align with Fife Contemporary’s core values.
We look to share and encourage activity that is multidisciplinary in approach and outcome and are interested in innovative, environmentally aware and conceptually strong work.
The Programme
Materialise runs over a year, with selected makers meeting regularly online with Fife Contemporary’s Artist Development Officer and invited guests. Participants also receive one-to-one support and advice and develop a collective online exhibition at the end of their years programme.
Over the years the groups have also elected to hold symposiums, in person exhibitions, critical feedback sessions, business planning sessions, residencies and pop-up markets in venues such as the V&A Dundee (pictured).
After Materialise
After taking part in the Materialise programme, makers have gone on to establish their own businesses or independent craft practice, run workshops or develop artist-led community activity, or continue their skill development journey through further study. Fife Contemporary continue to support and stay in contact with Materialise artists through online promotion and the opportunity to continue to stock their products in our online shop.
Materialise 7 – 2024
To accompany the Materialise 7 makers’ pop up market with Tea Green events, we produced a brochure showcasing each artist. Pocket-sized print copies were available for customers to take away, with a shareable digital version available online.
