Statements
Fife Contemporary rejects racism and supports Black Lives Matter
Fife Contemporary has an Equal Opportunities Policy and is committed to promoting equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion as well as eliminating discrimination. We are committed to listening to and learning from the lived experiences of Black people and people from Asian and minority ethnic communities. We will strive to understand the ways in which existing frameworks and practices within visual art and craft exclude them and perpetuate white privilege. We will identify ways in which we can improve our own practice and importantly take action.
We will look closely at what we do, who we represent, and how we include Black people and people from Asian and minority ethnic communities in our activities. This will involve training and educating ourselves, considering who we work with and promote, who our partners are, and how we promote and engage people in our opportunities, exhibitions and events.
Actions:
- Educate ourselves through reading, sharing and training to increase our understanding and knowledge about the impact of lived experiences of racism and discrimination;
- Collaborate with other organisations to build a stronger anti-racism voice in the visual arts and craft sectors ;
- Reflect on our past programming to identify positive practice and new areas of work to be developed;
- Review and revise our EDI Action Plan to ensure Black people and people from Asian and minority ethnic communities are represented in our work;
- Identify how to support/promote craft or visual artists and curators from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities through our artist and public activities;
- Seek advice from specialised organisations on engaging audiences from the Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities in Fife and beyond in our programme;
- Strengthen our recruitment procedure for stronger Black, Asian and minority ethnic representation within our staff and board;
- Continually reflect and learn from our resulting actions as part of a wider revision of our EDI Action Plan to strengthen our support of artists and engage audiences who share protected characteristics.
Context
The environmental challenge to the planet has moved from being described as climate change and global warming to a climate emergency. The cultural sector is at the forefront of recognising this and raising the profile of the situation. The Scottish Government has acknowledged that there is a situation of climate emergency and is working towards the country reaching net zero carbon (carbon and other greenhouse gases such as methane that cause global warming) by 2045. Creative Scotland required RFOs such as Fife Contemporary to monitor their carbon production and have a plan for reducing it.
Climate Emergency
Fife Contemporary Declared Climate Emergency in August 2019 and have continued to implement policies which seek to radically reduce our Carbon Footprint. We can be found at Culture Declares Emergency. We have set ourselves a target of becoming a Net Zero organisation by 2030. More information about how we are meeting our climate targets and supporting and encouraging artists and partners to do the same is available on our Environment pages.
