Natalia Bocian explores global impacts of climate emergency through personal and communal storytelling. In the series, Powódź/Flood she employs extensive research into source documentation, historical records and personal testimonies to develop her paintings. Her research into real events becomes transformed through her painted language and embraces the disjointed experience of trauma and memory.
The paintings in ‘Powódź’ (pronounced po-votch) are based on one of the most disastrous floods in Poland’s history that largely affected Bocian’s home city of Wrocław (pronounced vrots-whaf). The Great Flood of 1997 came as a shock to the citizens of Wrocław, and stories of the struggle became embedded in local folklore. In June of 2024, the water levels in Poland surpassed those of 1997, bringing the threat out of the realm of memory and story, and back into the present.
