Susie Johnston was born in Edinburgh and studied at Central St. Martins School of Art & Design, London, before moving to Sydney, where she graduated with a Master of Visual Arts from Sydney College of the Arts. After graduating, Johnston’s work shifted from painting towards sculpture and installation, as she began exploring deeply metaphoric associations embedded within materials themselves.
Susie returned to Scotland in 2000, where she continues to live and work. In 2015, she graduated from the Master of Fine Arts & Humanities programme, and is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD at DJCAD, Dundee.
Johnston has exhibited in museums, galleries and artist-run spaces for over three decades, and her works are held in private collections within Australia and the UK. Recent exhibitions include solo shows Commitment, Green Gallery, Dundee Botanic Gardens (2025); Momentum, Perth Creative Exchange (2021); and group shows RSA 199th Open Exhibition, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh (2025); Intertwined, Festival of the Earth, Dundee Botanic Gardens (2024); and Objects of Conviction, Patriothall Galleries, Edinburgh (2023). She has held a post-graduate teaching certificate from the University of Dundee since 2015, and runs community-based arts workshops and events closer to home in Perth.
