On this Day – 14 August 2010 – Double Visions
It’s hard to believe that eight years ago today saw the closing day of the Double Visions exhibition at the University of St Andrews Gateway Galleries.
This exciting exhibition was a rare opportunity to see work by artists from Papua New Guinea (PNG).
A larger version of the exhibition had been shown at Kirkcaldy Galleries from 15 May to 20 June 2010, before moving, in an abbreviated version, to the Gateway Galleries in St Andrews.
The artists involved transformed cultural tradition into contemporary expression through their choice of materials, subjects and an awareness of life in PNG today.
Specially featured were paintings by the major artist Mathias Kauage OBE (1944-2003).
Also exhibited were the delicate figurative scuptures made from recycled metal by Tom Deko; oils on canvas by Martin Morububuna; Sepik river carvings by Teddy Balangu, Lucas Tangun and Kaua Gita; and a range of textiles based on the traditional ‘bilum’ woven bag technique, featuring Cathy Kata.

Young artists inspired by Papua New Guinean art
Recently MUSA (Museum of the University of St Andrews) ran a series of art workshops for children in which they explored a variety of print techniques, using images of FCA&C’s exhibition, ‘Double Visions – Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea’ as their inspiration.

Double Visions now open in St Andrews
After its move from Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery, FCA&C’s exhibition – ‘Double Visions – Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea’ – opened at the St Andrews University’s Gateway Galleries (North Haugh, St Andrews) on Saturday and will be there until 14 August.

Free talks on Papua New Guinean contemporary art
FCA&C’s PNG exhibition ‘Double Visions – Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea’ moves to St Andrews University’s Gateway Galleries shortly where it will also be one of the focuses of the European Society of Oceanists’ conference.

New exhibition of Papua New Guinea work opens tomorrow
We’ve more or less finished installing an exhibition of contemporary work from Papua New Guinea – ‘Double Visions – Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea – in Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery, and, without sounding too biased, would certainly encourage people to trot along for a look.
