Ecology Centre Residency

Scottish writer and artist Annie Lord undertook a mini residency with The Ecology Centre, Kinghorn, as a partnership project supported by Fife Contemporary. Across spring and summer, she spent time onsite getting to know the people and place, and later returned to lead printmaking and drawing workshops that resulted in new shared resources for visitors and community groups.

This residency was delivered as a partnership between Fife Contemporary and The Ecology Centre. Working within the Ecology Centre’s grounds and community activity at Kinghorn Loch, the residency created opportunities for participants and volunteers to meet the artist, take part in creative sessions, and see their contributions become part of a shared celebration of the site.

Over spring and summer, Lord spent time onsite getting to know the Ecology Centre’s staff and volunteers, before returning to lead a series of printmaking and drawing workshops. The work made in these sessions, often focused on plants and animals found around Kinghorn Loch, was then developed into a set of celebratory and practical items for the Ecology Centre community.

What did they make?

  • Printmaking and drawing workshops with community groups and volunteers, produced artwork inspired by the local landscape such as tadpoles, frogs, coots, elder leaves, tree rings and earth forms.
  • Artwork was translated into textiles, made into metres of hand-sewn flag bunting, first shared at the Ecology Centre’s Beach Day on Kinghorn beach.
  • Additional fabric was used to create a set of weighted beanbags for games and future events.
  • A borrowable activity kit was made for visitors to use. This included a handmade notebook, viewfinder, ‘Discovery Drawing’ guide and art materials, packaged in a tote bag printed by an Ecology Centre volunteer.
