100 Buttercups has 100 drawings of 100 buttercups over 100 pages
Fife Contemporary Art & Craft looked forward to summer with an artist’s book celebrating a humble seasonal flower. 100 Buttercups contains 100 beautifully drawn, detailed images of buttercups by Fife based artist Laurie Clark. To inspire young artists FCA&C has presented a copy of the book to every primary school in Fife accompanied by an education pack full of ideas tailored to the Curriculum for Excellence. A copy will also go to all Fife libraries and another pack will be produced by FCA&C to accompany a copy of the book going to all Fife secondary schools.
100 Buttercups is published by the art imprint WAX366 with support from Fife Contemporary Art & Craft.
The book is the culmination of a series of buttercup studies Laurie began in 2001. Her interest in the flower came about through observing and realising the uniqueness of each one. Laurie said, “Here is a very common flower which we take for granted but I realised that each buttercup was as different and unique as we are people”.
100 Buttercups is based on flowers which grew in a field at St Monans. On Tuesday 21 June Laurie Clark met some of the pupils from St Monans Primary School and personally presented the school with her book. Pupils had already been busy drawing wild flowers in a field near the school and these drawings will be displayed in St Andrews Town Hall foyer beside FCA&C’s office from 17 August for a month.
To extend the flower theme a schools’ competition was organised by FCA&C to accompany the book. Pitreavie Primary School’s pupils were the lucky winners of an art workshop with acclaimed flower painter Kirsty Lorenz.
