Youth Arts Bursary for Craft Maker or Designer

website creator Fife Contemporary is looking to work with a Fife-based early career craft maker or designer over a year to create a bespoke programme of training, development and support to help them examine, understand and elevate their practice.

Beginning in April 2022 we will work with a selected craft maker or designer to match them with a mentor. There will be a bursary of £10,000 approximately half of which will cover a fee. The remainder will cover any training, materials, equipment, development costs directly related to the devised programme of activity. Fife Contemporary will help the maker budget for time and costs included in this opportunity and mentoring costs will be covered separately.

What we are looking for

  • a young craft maker or designer aged between 18-24 (we are also open to working with a disabled or care experienced young person who is over 25 who may have experienced disruption within their education pathways).
  • we do not require any formal qualifications but ask you to be able to demonstrate current involvement in craft of design and a passion to make it your career.
  • are available to commit at least 1 day a week to engage and get the most out of the programme. Some of this time will be self-directed development.
  • we would like to prioritise this opportunity for someone who is facing barriers in accessing opportunities and whose background is underrepresented in the craft sector.

A panel including a member of Fife Contemporary’s staff team and a young maker (who is currently part of our current programme Materialise) will make a shortlist.

Successful candidates will be invited for a short informal conversation with a panel including a member of Fife Contemporary’s staff team and our young board member representative. This will be to find out a little more about what you would like to explore and learn over the year. Questions will be given in advance. We value the time it takes to apply, attend and prepare for an opportunity like this and a fee of £95 will be given to each of the shortlisted candidates to cover your this.

We want to make this opportunity accessible to all and therefore can provide support for an individual to apply. Examples of this could be language translation, sign language interpreters and scribing support for dyslexic applicants. We are open to all approaches and will tailor any access requirements appropriately. Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss this.

Timeline

  • Individual meetings will take place mid-April 2022.
  • The Bursary programme will start in May 2022 end in February 2023.
