After a stunning first year, the Scottish Portrait Awards 2018 (SPAs) are open to anyone who is over 18 by 1 October 2018 and who was born in Scotland, is resident in Scotland or studying in Scotland. Entries may be submitted from 2 April and will close on 30 June 2018.
Prizes include the £5000 SPA in Fine Art. Entries may be in any 2D or 3D medium. The judges are seeking excellence in portraiture in a wide range of styles and mediums. As well as paintings we encourage sculpture, collage, digital works and installations and more, as long as these fit the size constraints. Fine art photography in colour can also be entered in the SPA in Fine Art category
The £2000 Richard Coward SPA Photography is only open to works in black and white. Analogue and digital formats are accepted.
Other prizes include the SPA Fine Art second prize of £1000 and a young artist award for under 25s to be announced in February.
The works of 60 finalists will be included in the Scottish Portrait Awards exhibition held in November 2018 at the Scottish Arts Club in Edinburgh. The winners of SPA awards will also be presented with one year free membership of the Scottish Arts Club, Edinburgh.
Judges for the SPA in Fine Art include artist and playwright John Byrne; Imogen Gibbon, chief curator at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; Guy Peploe, director of the Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh; multiple award-winning portrait artist Jennifer McRae, and fine contemporary artist Gordon Mitchell who is also the SPA Director.
Judges for the Richard Coward SPA in Photography include Ben Harman from Edinburgh’s Stills Gallery, Malcolm Dickson of Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow, photographer Robin Gillanders and Siobhán Coward.
