Inspiring the Future

Help inspire the future generation of makers

We believe that talent is everywhere, and that every child has the right to discover their talent for making. One of the key calls for change in Our Future is in the Making, the Education Manifesto for Craft and Making is to build more routes into craft careers.

Will you give one hour to talk to pupils & young people about your experience and your work in craft to inspire the next generation?

The Crafts Council has paired up with national education charity Inspiring the Future to ensure that craft is recognised as a route to a successful and rewarding professional life. We need makers and craft professionals from across the sector to help us to tell young people about what they do and how creative skills have shaped their working life.

From master goldsmiths to makers who build film sets and props, from the small batch production of designer makers to one-off ceramic masterpieces, and from centuries-old traditions to cutting edge digital making, craft skills open the doors to an incredible range of careers. We want to make sure young people know this.

Here’s where you come in.

We want everyone working in craft to tell their stories – whether you are a maker, gallerist, retailer, event producer, teacher, curator or critic –  in fact, anyone working in craft who can share their route into work and where their craft and creative skills have taken them.

If you want to make a difference and can give an hour of your time to talk to pupils and young people at a school or college near you, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Sign up as a volunteer to Inspiring the Future
  • You can find details here of what to think about in advance of visiting a school
  • In Spring 2016, the Crafts Council and Inspiring the Future will be running a series of events bringing together groups of makers to meet young people in a fast moving, ‘speed networking’ format. We’ll be looking at areas with groups of makers and craft professionals to get involved – so please spread the word to people in your networks, at your studio spaces and galleries.
  • Visit the Inspiring the Future resources for volunteers page if you need further information or guidance, or call the Inspiring the Future team: 0207 566 4880.
