‘Fray’ – Kit Martin, Verdant Works, Dundee

Exhibition, artist talk and cyanotype workshop at Verdant Works

Verdant Works (Dundee’s Jute Museum) was built in 1833 on lush meadows, once buzzing with insect life. We have now lost a huge amount of our meadows, throughout Scotland. And the insects that lived in them are in trouble.

Fray takes a forensic look at insects and wildflowers using digital and historical photographic processes. The exhibition looks closely with admiration at some of our essential yet diminishing pollinators and the wildflowers on which they feed and by chance, pollinate. Most of the specimens involved are from museum natural history collections.

Printing on fabric and paper, and making use of jute and linen, it includes hand printed cyanotype on textiles, digitally printed textiles, digital photographs on paper and lightbox and hand printed cyanotypes on jute paper.

Exhibition – 6 April – 30 June 2019
Mon – Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 11am-6pm (ticketed – see Verdant Works’ website)

Artist Talk
Saturday 11 May, 3-4pm, free but booking required via eventbrite

Introduction to Cyanotype Workshop
Saturday 11 May, 11-1pm

As part of Fray, Kit Martin is running a short 2 hour workshop for adults and teenagers. Participants will coat paper (made with jute) with cyanotype chemicals and make a print or two, working inside and outside, using the sun’s UV light to make the exposures. To accompany Fray, participants will work with wildflowers – feel free to bring some along to use.
