Call Out for Artists/Designers for Ocean Terminal Opportunity

The Scottish Design Exchange invites applications from Scottish-based makers, artists and designers who would like to sell their work, commission-free, at the organisation’s large boutique based in Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh.

The Scottish Design Exchange (SDX) is a not-for-profit company that supports over 150 creatives working in Scotland by selling their products commission-free, organising events, projects and exhibitions to spread the word about Scottish creative talent, and helping with digital marketing and public relations.

SDX runs on the ethos that there is so much more to Scotland than what the typical tourist shops sell. So they’re moving away from tartan, tweed and highland cows, and towards a more contemporary, design-led, innovative aesthetic.

Unlike a regular boutique, SDX offers customers a huge range of curated artwork under one roof, all at an affordable price. Products include art, furniture, product design, jewellery and fashion, none of whom pay any commission to SDX at all, simply a small rental payment to uphold their large retail space.

SDX is fighting back against high commission rates and unfair wholesale agreements. They work as a collaborative community and do anything and everything they can to support local creative talent.

In addition to providing you with a concession and display equipment, SDX promotes you across all social media channels, on many different fashion blogs, and on their website and the website/social media of Ocean Terminal, the shopping centre in which they are based. SDX also regularly organise events including blogger previews, meet the makers days and fashion shows, as well as regular editorial photoshoots and press days. In the sights for next year are expansions to other locations also, as well as some exciting creative funding opportunities. SDX has built a collective of artists and designers who share the rental cost of a major retail unit in a high footfall centre. They are not driven by profits, 100% of the sales price goes to the artist and designer, with no commission. They are also a living wage company!

SDX’s income from the space rental is used to pay the staff, the cost of the unit, and to market and promote the artists and designers work. Any additional profits which are not reinvested into the business will be donated to local community projects. They are now over 18 months into the project and it has been a phenomenal success which they want to build on.

To exhibit with SDX, please get in touch with information about yourself and pictures of your work. They will get back to you with a joining date and further information if you are successful, or constructive feedback if you are not.

For more information, please visit the Scottish Design Exchange.

Deadline is 31 July 2017
