The SPA in Fine Art includes £5000 first prize, £1000 second prize, £500 third prize plus £500 Young Fine Artist Award. The SPA in Fine Art seeks entries in any 2D or 3D medium in oil, acrylic, pencil, crayon, all forms of 3D portraits, works in mixed media, ceramics, tapestry, colour photography, digital portraits or literally any other material. The diversity of fine art works in the Scottish Portrait Awards exhibitions is a key strength that sets it apart from other portrait competitions. The judges for the SPA in Fine Art are John Byrne, Imogen Gibbon, Guy Peploe, Jennifer McRae and Gordon Mitchell, who is the fine art chair and SPA Director.
The Richard Coward SPA in Photography includes £3000 first prize, £500 second prize, £100 third prize plus the £500 Young Photographer award. The judges, including Ben Harman, Malcolm Dickson, Robin Gillanders and Siobhán Coward, seek strong photographs in black and white only. If your photograph works better in colour enter the SPA in Fine Art which is open to all mediums.
Thirty works from SPA in Fine Art and thirty from the SPA in Photography will be selected for the 2019 SPA exhibitions to be held in Edinburgh in November 2019, the Glasgow in January/February 2020 and Kirkcudbright from March to May 2020.
All finalists selected for the exhibition will be entered into the SPA Directory of Contemporary Scottish Portraiture and given a page on the SPA website to promote their work.
Enter either or both competitions as many times as you wish. Entry fee is £10 per work. The Scottish Portrait awards are run by a dedicated team of experienced volunteers, supported by the Scottish Arts Club Charitable Trust and backed by a small group of committed donors. We initiated the SPAs to celebrate, support and promote portraiture in Scotland. All proceeds, including all entry fees, are used to support the SPAs.
