Waste materials used

Using industrial waste by-products to create a material suitable for making ceramic tableware from is not an easy option. Once Sara has sourced the by-products, there are various laborious processes she has to go through before it’s usable. The photos show her sieving construction waste, and the short film, grinding and sieving stone slurry.

By-products include:

Hazardous glass slurry – by-product of polishing glass panel edges
Toxic stone slurry – by-product of cutting natural stone surfaces
Excavation waste – by-product from excavating the ground for construction
Metal filings – by-product of manufacturing metal staircases
Quarry waste – by-product of quarrying china clay

In the Craft Pods’ display, you can see examples of quarry, stone and glass waste (as shown in these images).
