George Colkitto

cardboard packaging

Such a complicated shape
designed to protect the computer
from the dangers of transportation

it unravels into unwieldy shapes
like some octopus struggling to escape
and I toss it into the garage for later annihilation

where it stares at me accusingly
saying surely I am too good to waste
see how I can be reformed structurally sound

and I have a vision of unsightly pipes
of a cover I would make in wood and should
now make in this sturdy cardboard this gift of a box

Stanley knife and tape measure
steady hand and the infamous sticky-backed plastic
give me my something for nothing the satisfaction of recycling
