Eleanor Butler

Since graduating Eleanor has dedicated her time to exploring larger works and delving into the world of welding. Her talents were recognised and celebrated at DJCAD’s degree show in 2022, prompting her to further develop her skills through personal practice.

Her degree show work was inspired by the 2020 lockdown, when physical touch was forbidden and our homes became our sole refuge, Eleanor sought to capture the weakened communication and growing sense of isolation. Extensive research allowed her to deeply understand the emotional state of the nation during those unprecedented times, and she aimed to spark meaningful conversations through her artwork.

Eleanor sates that: “The covid pandemic effected my studying during my 2nd and 3rd year at DJCAD, however eventually inspired my 4th year project that created a lot of interest at the DJCAD degree show. Without this project taking a last minute turn, from jewellery to welding I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Statement

Since graduating, Eleanor has dedicated her time to exploring larger works and delving into the world of welding. Stepping outside the confines of the jewelry workshop, Eleanor ventured into the realm of TIG welding to further challenge herself. Pushing the boundaries of sheet copper using compressed air, she discovered the limitations of her eclectic style rooted in found materials. Her talents were recognised and celebrated at DJCAD’s degree show in 2022, prompting her to further develop her skills through personal practice. Initially experimenting with materials like copper and aluminium, Eleanor has expanded her repertoire to include harder metals such as steel. In her pursuit of artistic growth, she recently completed a welding course and has now found her true passion in creating larger sculptures.
