Eden Parkes

“In my final year of undergraduate study, I created two collections featuring multiple structurally complex textile samples that incorporated 3D printed elements and traditional pleating techniques. These samples were designed to explore the endless possibilities of combining new and old techniques in an environmentally conscious way.”

“I am passionate about sustainable design and how it can be utilised to create a better circular economy. I aim to produce work that amplifies these views and helps educate others on how to support the environment and the local community.”

Statement

“I am a recent graduate of Textile Design from The University of Dundee 2021, with a specialism in Mixed Media and with interest in new technologies and environmental design. During my three years studying at DJCAD, I pushed myself to learn and explore multiple disciplines, including but not limited to Knitting, Dyeing, Screen Printing, 3D Printing and Laser Cutting. In my final year of study, I created two collections featuring multiple structurally complex textile samples that incorporated 3D printed elements and traditional pleating techniques. These samples were designed to explore the endless possibilities of combining new and old techniques in an environmentally conscious way. To view my work, please use the Instagram link below.

I am passionate about sustainable design and how it can be utilised to create a better circular economy. I have also recently begun volunteering at Dundee botanical gardens to take a step toward merging nature and design.”

Awards, Exhibitions and News

After my undergrad, I completed a three-month internship at Amtico Coventry and two – four-week traditional skills placements, one in Pano Lefkara, Cyprus and the other in Catalonia through Grampus Heritage Erasmus +. These placements explored sustainable rural development and traditional local crafts, which led me to my current course of study, a master of research in art and design (MDes(Res)) at the University of Dundee. Working with new technologies and old sustainable traditions to challenge conventional textiles. This year of study will allow me to explore further links between natural textile materials and organic matter to create a product to fit into a circular economy.

Effects during and post pandemic

“For the first five months of the pandemic, I decided it was best to move back in with my parents. At first it was somewhat distracting as I didn’t have a separate space to work, so I was constantly interrupted with lots of cups of tea and biscuits (it wasn’t all bad). However, I found that I could explore more of the place I called home for many years because they lived in the national park. It inspired me to find more sustainable options in textiles and ultimately led me to my 4th-year project – Coexistence.”
