About Sara Howard

Sara Howard is a London-based ceramic designer and sustainable materials’ researcher, whose practice is focused on reducing the environmental impacts of ceramic production.

During her final year at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design (London), Sara designed an industrial symbiosis [mutually beneficial relationship] where the waste by-products from industry, replace the raw materials used in the ceramics industry.

Sara makes an impact beyond her own practice by choosing to share her methods with fellow makers under the Creative Commons’ license. Making these material substitutions alone will not have a significant impact on the environment. However, if a number of ceramicists make these changes in their own practices, and more importantly in mass manufacturers, there is the potential to create a thriving sustainable industry.

This is why Sara released the Circular Ceramics book which outlines her methods of identifying, processing and substituting industrial waste for ceramic production.
