Deirdre Nelson studied textiles at Glasgow School of Art (1989-1992). She uses her skill in / knowledge of traditional textile practice to collaborate on site-specific installations that explore contemporary life through fabric and making. She is regularly invited to undertake artist’s residencies across the world, including most recently:
Nordic Arts Centre, Norway (2019); Textilsetur Islands, Icelandic Textile Center (2018); Walthamstow Wetlands (2017/8); Caterans Common, Alyth (2017); Platform Arts, Easterhouse, Glasgow (2016).
“My nomadic nature and interest in communities have allowed me to develop work for exhibition and on residencies … I am keen that people see textiles in a different way: hand-produced objects that integrate traditional skills with contemporary contexts.”
