CAREER HISTORY
2003-2012 – My professional practice in print has reduced to accommodate research and scholarship in teaching. Conference papers, posters and workshops on the subject of collaborative learning in C21st design education. I continue to work and extend my collaborative engagement with partners from the NHS, Dundee City Council, RSA and local agricultural communities to weave experiential learning activity from HE to community engagement. Highlighting of C21st issues and design expectations in education: sustainability, service design, social capitol, co-production, narrative communication and community context connect my portfolio of work in education, visualisation and craft practice. Professional practice currently focuses on employment to draw at events, as a facilitator of change; I capture opinion and evidence consultation in visual forms. These drawings are used as part of the consultation in service design activity and or part of the illustrative process for publication.
1999 – 2003 A balance between the professional practice of relief printmaking and collaborative engagement with communities emerged during this period in the form of a full-time post as Design Studies tutor at DJCAD and continuation of printmaking practice as member of print-makers council. I exhibited work in Europe and the US and developed a interest in ceramics due to the invitation to be part of the Plate show at the Collins Gallery in 1999. In 2000, an opportunity to focus on participatory design methods and design process through collaboration with NHS Speech & Language Therapist’s at Royal Victoria Hospitals and patients from the brain injury and rehabilitation unit. Developing relief printmaking activities as participatory design workshops, established a new direction in my design practice to improve impaired communication. Since 2000 I have worked with co-creators to prototype ways of engaging service users in the Aphasia community.
1996 – 1999 Part time tutor in Design School specialising in illustration and printmaking and design history and contemporary practice from 1996-2001. Research resident DJCAD 1998-9 as Designer in residence at Glasgow City Councils Transport Museum, resulted in a collaborative element to my work. This collaborative working became a central focus in teaching design theory and practice. Completed illustration commissions for Glasgow Herald Newspaper, Cannongate Books Edinburgh, Homes and Gardens, Orange and University of Dundee’s prospectus and annual report.
