Artist interview 6 – Mitchell & Black

The sixth of our artist interviews is textile duo, Lee Mitchell and Rebecca Black, who together form the Mitchell & Black partnership.  Read on to find out some more about them.

What’s your background and what inspired you to become a knitted accessories designer?

We are both graduates of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design with degrees in Constructed Textile Design. We are currently technicians within the Design and Craft programme at Duncan of Jordanstone; our roles provide an energetic and creative environment which constantly feeds our design process.

How would you describe your customers?

Apart from all being people with excellent taste they are extremely varied. We had a young lady purchase a snood for her grandmother as a Christmas gift; she gave her the snood and was presented with her Christmas gift from her Grandmother. She opened it to find her Grandmother had also bought her a Mitchell & Black creation.

What is your favourite piece from your collection?

The skinny cotton & wool oval scarves are a definite favourite. They are versatile pieces that can be worn together or individually in a variety of ways, we never seem to tire of playing with then.

What are the highlights of your career so far?

Every time a customer purchases a piece is a highlight. It’s so encouraging to see people love our accessories as much as we do.

What can we expect to see from you in the future?

The website with online shop is due to have been launched in May. We are looking to expand the collection further to include children’s accessories and a range of luxury baby blankets.

Thank you.
