Brown Linen
St Andrews Museum, September 13th to November 2nd 2008.
Fife Contemporary Arts & Craft present 'Brown Linen' by Jeanette Sendler Fife Arts Co-operative Partners' artist in residence 2007 to 2008.
Based in Newburgh, Jeanette became inspired by the village's historic past in the cottage weaving industry of the 18th century. Later jute was woven in Dundee and used as part of the floor cloth/linoleum industry in Newburgh.
"150 years after the handloom industry of Fife come to an end I learned to weave in Newburgh. The weaving history of Dundee and Fife has influenced my choice of material, linen and jute."
By combining the new skills with her expertise in tailoring, knitting, felting, printing and weaving Jeanette has produced work incorporating varied textile techniques. An installation comprising a length of woven cloth will dramatically span the gallery at St Andrews Museum. This will include the motif of crotcheted Newburgh cherry blossoms which re-appear in further pieces.
Woven panels refer in abstracted ways to the people involved in the handloom industry such as the Stampmaster. Jeanette's skill in evoking the past through contemporary work is hinted at through these pieces and in the story she has written to accompany a further installation called 'Mapping the Body'.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an essay by Dr Jessica Hemmings, Reader in Textile Culture at Winchester School of Art. A full programme of textile based activities for adults and children will also take place at St Andrews Museum to complement the show.
