Double Visions - Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea

15 May - 20 June 2010, Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery (War Memorial Gardens, Kirkcaldy, KY1 1YG, tel 01592 583213, open Mon-Sat 10-5, Sun 2-5, admission free)

A rare Scottish opportunity to see work by contemporary artists from Papua New Guinea (PNG) in varied media is on show at Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery from 15th May to 20th June.

A special feature of the exhibition will be paintings by the major artist Mathias Kauage OBE (1944-2003) who once visited Scotland and met the Queen. Also exhibited will be delicate figurative sculptures from recycled metal by Tom Deko; oils on canvas by Martin Morububuna; Sepik river carvings by Teddy Balangu, Lucas Tangun and Kaua Gita; and a range of textiles based on the traditional 'bilum' woven bag technique, featuring Cathy Kata.

Diana Sykes from Fife Contemporary Art & Craft said 'the artists have transformed cultural tradition into contemporary expression through their choice of materials, subjects and an awareness of life in PNG today.'
'Double Visions: Contemporary Art from Papua New Guinea' is presented by FCA&C in collaboration with the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery, London. The 'Hailans to Ailans' section was originally organised with the Alcheringa Gallery, Victoria, Canada.

As this is such a unique opportunity to experience art from the other side of the world we are offering two free events which will give an extra insight into the work.

  • Come along on Sunday 30th May at 2.30pm to hear Dr Tony Crook from the University of St Andrews talk on 'Double Visions of a Papua New Guinea worldview.'
  • And join an informal exhibition tour, on Sunday 13th June, at 2.30pm with Diana Sykes from Fife Contemporary Art & Craft.

More activities to accompany the exhibition and further information on Fife Contemporary Art & Craft and their visual art & craft programme can be found on their website.
