All Aboard the Art Bus!
'Making Spaces' is officially launched at 11am on 23 May at Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery. Organised through a partnership between Fife Contemporary Art & Craft (FCA&C) and Fife Council Libraries & Museums, 'Making Spaces' is touring Fife in MAC, Fife's mobile museum.
The 'Making Spaces' exhibition explores the different working spaces used by artists and makers past and present. A converted 1930s cinema in Kinghorn, a windswept garden in the Pentland hills, a former town hall in Newburgh - where artists' work can be as varied as the art they make. Historical studios have been selected which can be visited by the public such as Henry Hornel's studio in Kirkcudbright now run by the National Trust for Scotland. Some of the contemporary spaces in Fife can also be visited through open studio schemes such as North Fife Open Studios and East Neuk Open Studios. Information on these opportunities to meet the artist and see where they work is available onboard MAC in the exhibition's mini library.
Five artists in residence will accompany Making Spaces as it tours Fife. They will give a direct and personal insight into where and how they develop their work through activities such as talks and workshops. From March to June the artists in residence are Malcolm Cruickshank and Jenny Smith - both winners at the recent Visual Artists Scotland awards at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh.
During the summer Kevin Reid, originally from Kelty, returns to Fife to organise a variety of original art activities as MAC features on high streets and at festivals. September to December the artists will be printmaker Elspeth Lamb and ceramicist Frances Priest.
Diana Sykes, Director of FCA&C said, "Making Spaces is an exciting new Fife-wide project combining an exhibition with accompanying artists in residence. The tour started in March with pilot venues and continues right through until December visiting a wide variety of schools, colleges, care homes, festivals and other community venues. It's a great way of reaching new audiences."
Support from the Ernest Cook Trust, the Robertson Trust, the Friends of the Crawford Arts Centre and the Regional Development Challenge Fund (Digital Resources Development Team) has made this complex project possible.
Visits from MAC are free and although the tour is booking up rapidly there are still opportunities for community groups and schools to book this stimulating project - phone the Exhibitions & Outreach Team on 01592 583213.
